ORIGIN: from Latin valent- pres. ppl stem of valere be strong: see -ent.
1.Esp. Chemistry & Immunology. Forming adjectives with the sense ‘having a valency of the specified number’, as monovalent, divalent, multivalent; univalent, bivalent, polyvalent.
2.Cytology. Forming adjectives and nouns with the sense ‘(a meiotic structure) composed of the specified number of chromosomes’ as univalent, bivalent, quadrivalent.
 NOTE  Although the suffix is of Latin origin, the Greek-derived prefixes (mono-, di-, etc.) are now more usual in Chem. than the Latin ones (uni-, bi-, etc.).
