词源
from or suggested by Greek - graphia 'writing'.
-graphy|grəfɪ|= F., G. -graphie, Sp. -grafía, It. -grafia, L. -graphia, repr. Gr. -γραϕία in ns. adapted from Gr. or formed on Gr. types. The Gr. ns. in -γραϕία are abstract nouns of action or function derived from the ns. (or adjs.) in -γράϕος (see -graph, -grapher). Many of these have been adapted in Eng. (usually through the medium of other langs.), and many other compounds of Gr. elements on the analogy of them have been formed in Eng., or adapted from Fr. or mod.Lat. Some of the words with this ending denote processes or styles of writing, drawing, or graphic representation, as brachygraphy, calligraphy, stenography, cryptography, lithography, photography. More commonly they are names of descriptive sciences, as geography, bibliography (cf. the Gr. βιβλιογραϕία, which means the writing of books), astrography, cometography, petrography, selenography, etc. Hybrid formations with this ending are rare, stratigraphy being almost the only example that has obtained general currency. All ns. in -graphy have actual or potential correlative agent-nouns in -grapher and adjs. in -graphic, -graphical.
-graphy
word-forming element meaning "process of writing or recording" or "a writing, recording, or description" (in modern use especially in forming names of descriptive sciences), from French or German -graphie, from Greek -graphia "description of," used in abstract nouns from graphein "write, express by written characters," earlier "to draw, represent by lines drawn," originally "to scrape, scratch" (on clay tablets with a stylus), from PIE root *gerbh- "to scratch, carve" (see carve).
-graphy /grəfi/ suffix.
ORIGIN: French, German -graphie from Latin from Greek -graphia writing.
Forming nouns (freq. with -o-: see -ography) with the sense ‘a style or method of writing, drawing, etc.,’ as calligraphy, lithography, stenography; with the sense ‘the writing of or about (something denoted by the first element)’, as hagiography, historiography; with the sense ‘the branch of knowledge relating to a particular descriptive science or instrumental recording technique,’ as bibliography, geography, radiography.
-graphy

the process of writing, describing, or recording: Cryptography = the process of writing in code. Radiography = the process of recording with X rays.
such writing, description, or record: Biography = a writing about someone’s life. Filmography = a description or record of motion-picture films.
