"soft mud," Old English wase "soft mud, mire," from Proto-Germanic *waison (cognates: Old Saxon waso "wet ground, mire," Old Norse veisa "pond of stagnant water"), from PIE *wes- (2) "wet." Modern spelling is mid-1500s.
