词源
related to French - génie; both forms derive from Greek -geneia, from gen- (root of gignomai 'be born, become' and genos 'a kind').
-genysuffix = mod.F. -génie, in mod. scientific language appended to Gr. stems to form ns. with the general sense ‘mode of production (of something specified)’, as in anthropogeny, biogeny, cosmogeny, geogeny, ontogeny, phylogeny, physiogeny, etc. Most of these ns. have either corresponding ns. in -genesis, or adjs. -genetic (in many instances both of these).[The suffix may be regarded as representing Gr. -γένεια, the ending of abstract ns. f. adjs. in -γενής (as in ὁµογένεια, f. ὁµογενής): see -gen. But in all probability it was actually f. the root gen- in genesis, etc. (vaguely apprehended as meaning ‘to produce’) + -y3, F. -ie.]
-geny
word-forming element meaning "genesis, origin, mode of production," forming corresponding abstract nouns to words in -gen, from French -génie and Modern Latin -genia, from Greek -geneia, from -genes "born, produced," the form in compounds of genos (see genus).
-geny /dʒəni/ suffix.
ORIGIN: Corresp. to French -génie, both repr. Greek -geneia, forming nouns from adjectives in -genēs.
Forming nouns denoting ‘(mode of) generation’, as in biogeny, ontogeny; = -genesis (which has tended to supersede it).
